Behind the Scene and other Major Plot Points
Preparation for the role.
Matt Damon was trained in Hungary by Lajos Kassai, a world champion archer and reinventor of horseback archery.
Taotie are the beasts in the movie. Its literal meaning is gluttonous ogre. This is an ancient mythical creature that is gluttonous and never satisfied with any amount of food. Some argue that the design can be traced back to jade pieces found in 3310 to 2250 BCE.
This was the most expensive Chinese movie ever,
at $135m and, due to the huge amount of crew involved, had over one hundred translators working on the production.
Majority of the movie was filmed in China and some scenes in New Zealand.
Despite the poster saying the Great Wall took 1700 years to build,
it is a series of several walls built separately over that time by various ruling dynasties during this time frame. Each new wall section built by any single ruler would take approximately 10-20 years to construct.
As per Matt Damon
Constance Wu publicly criticized the movie for offering the leading role to Matt Damon and Damon himself for accepting, stating it was “cultural misappropriation” for a Caucasian, Western nation-born actor to be presented as the driving force behind the Great Wall’s construction, when the majority of it was led and done by Chinese civilians. Damon later stated that he was hurt by the backlash against the role and that he did not feel the criticism of his part was accurate. Andy Lau both defended Damon’s part in the project and put it into context by noting that “there are five characters who are the leaders of the battle for survival of ma kind (in the film), and the four guys who fight alongside (Damon) are all Chinese”.
The coloured mountains are real.
They can be seen in Zhangye in the north west of China.
When William (Matt Damon) was asked if he had been left behind before, he replied, “Yes. Twice before. And it didn’t end well for them.” A nod to his previous films ‘The Martian’ and ‘Interstellar’, in both of which he was left behind on other planets.
