Behind the Scene and other Major Plot Points
Do you think that Howard Payne was one of the most evil villians
I think he was because he blew up a bus just to get attention, he was going to blow up the bus regardless if he got the money or not, informed Jack about Harry’s death in a very mean way, laughed as he shot the train driver, etc. I think he was one of the most evil movie villains of all time. What do you think?
Keanu Reeves’ best film performance
Reeves was surprisingly good in this movie. He was convincing as an experienced, smart cop. Jack didn’t seem like the cookie-cutter hero who just knew everything. He seemed like a guy who had been through it all and was actually instinctive and smart. And what was really surprising was the Reeves was playing a YOUNG cop who was smart. Usually it has to be someone in their 40s or 50s to be convincing as a world-wearly cop, but Reeves was extremely believable.
‘Speed’ or ‘True Lies’
I remember when both came out the same year and were massive action blockbusters. Which one did you like better?
Man..this is actually a tough call
I like them both
I prefer Speed. Pure action, no distracting subplots, not as sexist
But were summer stealers, but Speed was something fresh and new. It was just so faced-paced all the way through, and so damn exciting.
True Lies remains a favorite to this day, but it’s more a “normal” action film, whereas Speed changed the genre with its new formula.
In 1994, Speed. Today, True Lies.
Speed. Better story. But I liked True Lies as well.
I think True Lies is the better film overall but Speed is more watchable.
Speed. Sandra Bullock drives the bus – one of the most memorable movie plot points of the 90s.
Hopper’s maniacal laugh!
There are so many delights in Hopper’s performance, but does anyone else just love that crazed, maniacal laugh that he does at the beginning of the film? You know, when Jack has him at gunpoint, and just before he walks into the car park and detonates the bomb, he stands there, and just . . . LAUGHS.
It always makes me smile because it truly is a wtf moment.
He has no other reason to do it, other than the fact he’s a madman.
Love it. It makes him look nuts and because he’s not a big guy who would actually stand a chance fighting Jack it makes total sense. Crazy not stupid.
The maniacal laughs killed me in this movie. I was cracking up after every one. So over the top but in a good way.
Bus smahing into the plane
The scene where the bus smashes into an empty jumbo jet plane being towed across the runway was was actually filmed at the Mojave Airport. According to the DVD Commentary, Jan De Bont says it was “out in the desert, on an old runway”.
Stunt coordinator …
..Tracy Bunting told Interview Magazine that this was “the most challenging” of her career, in particular the iconic “stroller full of cans” scene.
Jan de Bont cast Dennis Hopper because he didn’t want a typical villain. He wanted Payne to be a regular guy who just snapped one day.
Casting of Keanu Reeves
Jan de Bont cast Keanu Reeves as Jack Traven after seeing him in Point Break (1991). He felt that the actor was “vulnerable on the screen. He’s not threatening to men because he’s not that bulky, and he looks great to women”.
20th Century Fox were not convinced..
..to begin with that Keanu Reeves had enough star clout to front the film and insisted on a big name actress to star alongside him. Jan de Bont refused. Fox relented to his casting of Sandra Bullock with Reeves only two weeks before shooting began.
Voted one of AFI’s Top 100 Heart-Pounding Movies of all time: number 99.
Movie offered to other directors
Renny Harlin and Quentin Tarantino were offered the chance to direct, but turned it down. Tarantino later named the film as one of his 20 favorite films since 1992.
RT/Meta Critic Review
Believe it or not, the most exciting movie of the year takes place mainly in an elevator, on a city bus and on a train car.(Click here to see)
