John Wick: Chapter 2
10 Feb 2017
Behind the Scene and other Major Plot Points
To prepare for the role,
Keanu trained for three months. His training consisted of Judo, Jujitsu, marksmanship and driving.
John Wick is intended to be a trilogy, this film being the second in that trilogy
“So I guess you have a choice.”
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) says to the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) “So I guess you have a choice.” This phrase, or variations of it, was a constant theme of these actors’ previous collaboration, the Matrix Trilogy (1999-2003).
The film begins..
right after the events of John Wick (2014).
No policeman seen throughout the entire film
Despite the number of kills and public gunfights, there are no policemen seen throughout the entire film besides Jimmy, who was also the only police officer in the first installment. However, during one of the scenes set in Rome, you can clearly hear some sirens in the background, meaning that cops have been alerted and were sent to the place
Interview with Screen Junkies
Chad Stahelski and David Leitch mentioned in Screen Junkies interview how there were several different story ideas for John Wick 2, including ones which would have him saving his daughter, or some love interest
This movie was partially filmed in Montreal, Quebec.
The city’s architecture and various landmarks are visible during the film, including in the first scene, in which John drives past the “Scotiabank Theatre Montreal” on Saint Catherine Street, where the movie would be shown in 2017
Reference to Counter Strike
The fight between Keanu Reeves and Common in Rome contains a stairway which is one of the iconic parts of the Counter Strike Map “Italy”.
There are interesting resemblances between this movie and The Matrix trilogy
. In both, the characters belong to an exclusive creed that runs parallel to the rest of the world. Besides Jimmy in John Wick, there are no real “characters” among the civilian population of either movie (for different and obvious reasons
Killing using a pencil
In the first John Wick film, Viggo Tarasov mentions how John once killed three men with a pencil. In this film, John does indeed kill two assassins using only a pencil.
“I am the only one to help you.”
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) says to the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) Keanu Reeves was called The One by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in the Matrix Trilogy (1999-2003)
Reference to game “Payday 2”
There are multiple references to the co-op action game “Payday 2”, such as a scene where the Payday Clown’s masks are seen as graffiti on a wall. The final contract’s number, 1111111, was also a slight nod to an inside joke of the Payday 2 community. In the game, John Wick appears as a playable character. When he was first released, he only had one line for when he collected a bag of loot, that line being “ONE!” this line would go on to become a joke among fans of the game as well as turn into a mod that replaced all of John Wick’s lines with “ONE!”.
RT/Meta Critic Review
Any pulp flick can make a man bleed. John Wick smartly keeps the focus on this universe’s crazy culture.
